Before complex language, humans related to the world through rhythm, vibration and resonance. Drumming, chanting, humming, and breath sounds were among the earliest tools used to coordinate group behaviour and induce trance or meditative states.
Different instruments create different experiences. Tibetan and Himalayan singing bowls and bells were used for clearing mental turbulence. Drums in Siberian, Mongolian, Native American, and Amazonian traditions use repetitive rhythm to entrain the brain into theta states. Rattles are used to break stagnation and shift consciousness. Chanting is used to guide the mind into non-ordinary awareness.
Sound journeys are used in modern culture as a response to nervous system overload and to harmonize inner stillness.
